Horse Powered Reading

Social-emotional learning is integrated into academics. Students have an experiential learning experience by interacting with horse on the ground. Student-horse teams use toys and props to practice five critical reading skills- phonemic awareness decoding, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. 

This type of program can help students who struggle with reading, who lack motivation, or are experiencing issues such as ADHD, anxiety, depression achieve connection with the horses and make progress reading. This program can also provide extra practice for students who are already skilled readers.

Due to the busy nature of the farm environment, parents are asked to stay on property for the duration of the lesson. If they are unable to do so, we ask they either make other arrangements or let Lauren and Allie know. 

This course is taught by Lauren Cantor, literacy specialist, and Allie Gleaton, a PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor.

Lessons begin with an hour in the on-site classroom at the farm for direct literacy instruction. Students then move outside and will be given a brief safety orientation before moving to work with the horses and begin an activity that reinforces the classroom lesson.
